Sage Rishyasringa

King Dasaratha, before he had his four sons – Rama, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrugana had a daughter – Shantha. Shantha's mother was Kausalya – Dasaratha's first wife.

King Dasaratha had a very close friend – Romapada, the King of Anga. Now Romapada loved children very much, he was unfortunately childless.

Romapada once came and talked to Dasaratha, 'Dasaratha! I have a favour to ask you!'

Dasaratha wondered what such a great king could want from him. 'Go ahead Romapada! What do you have in your mind?..'

Romapada looked at Dasaratha and at Queen Kausalya and felt slightly ashamed but continued, 'I have no children of my own.....I love children very much...You probably know that....' Dasaratha and Kauslaya looked at each other wondering where this was going as Romapada continued, 'Your daughter Shantha....She is so sweet and cute....' Romapada said a little desperately, 'Look....I know I cannot be as good a parent as you....But will you please....give your daughter in adoption to me....'

Romapada looked at Dasaratha and Kausalya with a little desperation. Kausalya was deeply astonished that Romapada would ask Dasaratha to give his only child in adoption. But then she realized that Romapada had figured that Dasaratha had three wives and he would have plenty more children. However Kausalya was troubled...To give her only child in adoption did not seem right....She then looked at Romapada once more. The more she looked at him the more she felt that he was a man driven to desperation....Romapada would not have come here unless he felt he had no other choice....

Kausalya looked out of her palace window and glanced at Shantha playing in the garden. She saw the king also studying Shantha with hungry eyes. She was moved with pity...The man actually needed her daughter...She realized. She turned to Dasaratha who was looking troubled and nodded her head and smiled. Dasaratha widened his eyes wondering whether he had understood his wife correctly...To give up his only child in adoption....

Dasaratha spoke to Romapada, 'King why don't you just rest here...I will talk with my wife and come back...' Romapada did not even hear Dasaratha. He was just looking at Shantha as he nodded his head. Dasaratha and Kauslaya went into their inner room, 'Queen Kausalya!' He said as soon as they entered inside the room, 'You don't mind giving your only daughter in adoption...'

Kausalya spoke softly, 'Dasaratha, did you see that man's face when he saw Shantha! We can have plenty more children if we want to...But Romapada genuinely loves Shantha....And Shantha also loves Romapada very much...I think she will be happier there....'

Dasaratha knew that his wife had a very good judgment and spoke only after considering all the sides of a problem. Slowly Dasaratha nodded his head. He went outside and saw that Shantha had finished playing and was coming inside the palace...She ran inside her parent's room and when she saw Romapada she squealed with delighted and ran to him. Romapada hugged Shantha.

Dasaratha knew that his wife had told him the right thing. He came outside and saw Shantha sitting on Romapada's lap talking with each other and giggling. 'Father!' Shantha said as she looked at Dasaratha and Kausalya come out of the room.

Dasaratha came towards the young child and looked at Shantha, 'Shantha! Do you like King Romapada...'

Shantha smilled and hugged Romapada once more, 'Oh yes! He is my favourite...'

Dasaratha asked softly, 'Would you like to go and live in Anga with him...'

Not understanding what he was asking, Shantha squealed with delight, 'You mean I will live with him...That is so nice....'

Romapada understood that Dasaratha was willing to give Shantha in adoption to him. He bowed to the king and queen. They performed the ceremonies and soon gave Shantha in adoption. Shantha was too young to understand much of the 'adoption'. The only thing she understood that she was going to live with Romapada henceforth....Her parents had told her that she would always come and visit them whenever she wanted....

Shantha happily went off with Romapada. There Romapada kept her so happily that soon she forgot almost everything about Kausalya and Dasaratha. For her Romapada was her father....The kingdom prospered and everyone was very happy.

When Shantha grew up to be a beautiful girl, fame of her beauty and intelligence spread all around. Unfortunately at this time a great famine struck the kingdom of Anga. Rains failed and the crops were down. The kingdom was almost in doldrums...

Wondering what to do, the king was talking to his minsters, when they told him about the sage Rishyasringa. The minister told King Romapada, 'Rishyasringa was the son of Sage Vibhandaka.' [In Sanskrit Rishyasringa name means 'the boy with horns on his head']

King Romapada asked, ' Vibhandaka? The son of Sage Kashyap? How could he have a son with horns in his head?'

The minister continued, 'Sir! Rishyasringa's mother is a deer sir! That is the reason, he has horns in his head....'

The king nodded, 'But how would he solve our problems?'

'Sir! Vibhandaka brought up his son in the forests near Anga!' The minister said calmly, 'Till date, Rishyasringa has never seen any women sir! The entire forests does not have any women or girls...Rishyasringa has not even seen another human other than his father sir!'

The king was stupefied that such a person could even exist! He nodded for the minister to continue. The minister cleared his throat and continued, 'Because...because Rishyasringa never had any distractions of any kind....he keeps meditating all the time...He has immense powers of meditation sir! He is so pure that wherever he goes...rains will follow...' The minister said earnestly.

The king frowned and nodded. He dismissed his court and then talked with Shantha in private, 'Shantha! You heard what the minister said...Any ideas?'

Shantha nodded, 'We could send the courtesans of our country...' [Courtesans were women who were trained in various arts, music and were very beautiful women....] 'Rishyasringa has never seen women...I think looking at them would make him feel different....Father!...' Shantha said resolutely, 'This Rishyasringa, once he comes to our country....I...I...' She said looking down and shyly, 'If he is willing and if it is ok with you, I would like to marry him....' Romapada was startled and happy at the same time. He slowly nodded as Shantha continued, 'I think such a man is great! And besides Sage Vibhandaka may be very angry if we bring Rishyasringa here...'

'So your marriage is one of the best ways of keeping Vibhandaka from getting more angry...' Romapada said softly. Shantha nodded but did not say anything.

Shantha called in the best courtesans from the kingdom. She told them all about Rishyasringa. 'Avoid sage Vibhandaka at all costs! He is dangerous! If he finds you with his son....He may curse you...' The courtesans nodded their head. Princess Shantha then asked the architects of the kingdom to built a huge ship. The ship was filled with beautiful plants, trees and flowers. In the middle was a ashrama to make it look like a hermitage.

At last the courtesans went afloat towards the forests near Anga. The courtesans got down and observed the Sage Rishyasringa and his father. They saw that they had a routine. In the afternoons, Sage Vibhandaka went into the deeper forests to meditate, whereas Rishyasringa stayed behind in the ashrama to tend the fire and clean the place.

The courtesans agreed that the afternoons was the best time to approach Rishyasringa.

The very next afternoon, after Vibhandaka had left the hermitage, one of the courtesan came forward and went into the ashrama. Rishyasringa looked at the woman and was amazed. He had never seen any human being other than his father. He always thought all of them were strict and stern like his father. But this person was ….beautiful.

Assuming that the woman was also a rishi like him, Rishyasringa came forward and welcomed the woman. He gave her some fruits from the hermitage and talked with her for long....She gave him some food that she had brought from the ship. Rishyasringa ate it and was delighted as it was very different....Not like the tasteless food he ate everyday....

The woman however remembered that she had to hurry back as Sage Vibhandaka would be back any minute.

She told Rishyasringa, 'I have to go back home, I have to do the agnihotra puja....'

Rishyasringa felt an urge to meet the person again, 'When...When will we meet again....' He asked innocently.

The courtesan laughed, 'Probably tomorrow....' She left immediately. Rishyasringa was deep in his thoughts and had not cleaned up the ashrama and had not even tended the fires.

Sage Vibhandaka came home and was surprised to find his ashrama untidy and his son looking like in a daze. Wondering what had happened, Sage Vibhandaka asked Rishyasringa, 'Son! What happened? You have not even done your work...Is something wrong...?' He asked anxiously.

Rishyasringa spoke in a daze, 'Father! A rishi came in today. But...But...But he was nothing like you and me....He had beautiful long hair...He smelt differently....a divine perfume....He had lots of flowers in his hair and he talked with me...Listening to him talk made me want to listen to him again and again...'

Hearing to the description given by Rishyasringa, Sage Vibhandaka knew that a women had been here. He became more and more angry and finally in a fit of anger told his son, 'Son! That was no sage! That was a demon! The demon was sent to take away all the powers of your meditation....Next time you see the demon...drive the demon away....'

'But father....' Rishyasringa said a little desperately.

Sage Vibhandaka put his foot down. 'We are not discussing this any further....Do not let the demon come near you...'

Rishyasringa was crestfallen. But he could not understand the reactions of his father. He did not think the sage who had come meant him any harm...Why was his father behaving like this....

The next day Vibhandaka decided to go and see the woman himself to drive her away. He left the ashrama early in search of the woman. However what the sage did not know was that the courtesan was near the ashrama waiting for Vibhandaka to leave. As soon as Vibhandaka left, the courtesan came forward. Rishyasringa was thrilled on meeting the courtesan again. He almost jumped with joy and came forward to meet her.

However before the courtesan could say a word, Rishyasringa spoke in a whisper, 'Look we have to get out of here...My father...my father told me you were a demon....I do not think he would like it if you keep coming here....Will you take me with you to your ashrama?'

The courtesan could not believe her ears! Rishyasringa was ready to come with her so soon...She nodded and they left the ashrama and made for the huge ashrama in the ship. Rishyasringa was thrilled on seeing the beautiful hermitage, which looked nothing like the wild place he lived in. He went inside the ashrama.

The courtesan's and Rishyasrringa set sail and soon they all reached the kingdom of Anga.

As soon as Rishyasringa reached the kingdom of Anga, the heavens opened up and the rains fell. The king and Shantha were thrilled. The people were happy! King Romapada came forward and offered Rishyasringa his daughter in marriage.
Sage Rishyashring looked at Princess Shantha and realized that she was even more beautiful than the courtesan. Talking with her he realized that she was extremely intelligent and strong. Sage Rishyashringa decided that he would be willing to live with her for the rest of his life...

Both of the them lived happily in the kingdom of Anga.

However Vibhandaka was very angry. He figured out that this must be the work of the king of Anga and set out towards that place.

However Romapada and Shantha were prepared for this. They knew that Vibhandaka would become very angry. As Vibhandaka came closer to the kingdom, he found a herd of healthy cows waiting for him as a gift from his son Rishyasringa! The sage was surprised. His anger cooled down a little. As he went even more forward, he found more such gifts awaiting him! As Vibhaandaka reached the capital of Anga, he had almost cooled down. He reached the palace gates and there found his son with his beautiful and intelligent daughter-in-law.

Wearing a crown in his head, Rishyashringa looked like the Lord of the Heavens. Vibhandhaka felt calm and peaceful looking at them.

Shantha and Rishyashringa came forward and fell at the sage's feet. The sage felt proud on looking at them and felt no anger. He blessed the couple and went back to the forests!

However the story of King Rishyasringa does not end here. He had one more work to finish before he retired again to the forests. He was in a way responsible for the birth of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Shatrugana...

After Shantha married Rishyashringa and both of them stayed with her father King Romapada, and the Kingdom of Anga flourished. Rishyashringa had collected immense powers of penance and because of this the country of Anga was prosperous and happy.
However now trouble was brewing in the kingdom of Ayodhya. King Dasaratha – Shantha's biological father was having a problem. He had given his only daughter in adoption. He had three wives – Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra, but he had no children to carry on the kingdom after him!
King Dasaratha was worried. He could not concentrate on the affairs of the kingdom. It was at this time that Sumantra, Dasaratha's minister came and talked to him. 'Your majesty! You do not seem well...You look worried and unhappy...Is there anything I can do to...' Sumantra looked at the king waiting for him to explain.
King Dasaratha drew a deep breath and said, 'Sumantra! I have nothing to hide from you...I have tried to be a good king...' Sumantra vigorously nodded his head, as Dasaratha continued, 'But I will not stay young forever...I will need to pass on the affairs of my kingdom and retire....But what can I do? Whom do I give the reins of my kingdom...I ….'
Sumantra held up his hands and smiled with a twinkle in his eyes, 'Your Majesty! The answer to your question lies with Shantha...'
Dasaratha was enraged, 'I have given Shantha in adoption to Romapada...I cannot...'
Sumantra smiled and said, 'Your majesty! Hear me out! Shantha is now married. She is married to a great sage by name Rishyashringa...'
Dasaratha listened attentively as Sumantra continued, 'Sage Rishyashringa is very powerful and has lots of powers of penance... In fact he is so powerful that it was because of him that the famine of the Anga kingdom came to an end...'
Dasaratha slowly nodded his head as he heard Sumantra, 'So you are saying we invite him and Shantha here?'
Sumantra nodded and said, 'Yes your majesty! I have heard of a yagna called as the 'putrakameshti yagna'... It is yagna performed for getting children...It is not an easy yagna to perform...But Rishyashringa with his power would be able to perform the yagna...'
Dasaratha's eyes lit up as he spoke almost joyously, 'So you are saying that I should invite Rishyashringa here and ask him to perform the putrakameshti yagna for me?'
Sumantra nodded and Dasaratha was looking at him happily.
Immediately King Dasaratha went to the kingdom of Anga and requested his friend King Romapada, to send Shantha and Rishyashringa with him to Ayodhya for performing the yagna.
Both Rishyashringa and Shantha gladly came with Dasaratha. Deep inside Rishyashringa realized that this was the actual reason he had been brought out of the forests by Shantha. He started preparing for the yagna earnestly.
As he possessed immense powers of penance, Rishyashringa was able to perform the difficult yagna with ease. At the end of the yagna, Agni, the God of the Fire emerged from the fire.
He called out to Dasaratha, 'Here take this payasam,[pudding] Dasaratha!' Saying this the Deva handed over King Dasaratha a golden pot. 'Divide the contents among your wives. You will have the children, you have always wanted...' Dasaratha bowed to the Deva as he vanished.
After the Deva had vanished, Dassaratha deeply thanked Rishyashringa and Shantha for their help. Rishyashringa felt like he had finished the work for which he had been brought out of the forest. Both he and Shantha retired to the forests near Anga and Rishyashringa began his penances and meditation again.
It was after taking the payasam, that Dasaratha had four sons - Ram, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan...

These sacred ceremonies purify the earth’s atmosphere, uplift the community, and contribute to the health and prosperity of the person.

A Homa is a holy fire ritual in which various forms of the Divine are invoked into the fire according to Vedic procedure. Special offerings are made into the fire while Sanskrit mantras are chanted. The combination of the powerful energy of the fire and the mantras creates purifying vibrations that are beneficial to all present and also to the entire world.

Even the damaging effects of natural disaster can be reduced through the performance of homas. Every kind of negative karma can be purified by the sacred fire due to divine grace

Each homa  should be performed strictly according to the Hindu vedic scriptures. Homas are conducted by fully learned and experienced priest/scholars. The ingredients required for each homa is different, but the basic things will be ghee, coconut.

Attla tadiya Nomu

When evil forces gained strength and got the upper hand and embodied themselves as demons and began to destroy the Dharma Setu (Bridge of Dharma). Rajas and Tamas were the most predominant evil qualities in them. They tortured the people in innumerable ways. In such a situation Shri Bhuvaneshwari, Divine Mother assumed divine forms with the names Kumari, Tripura, Kali and Durga and established the age old Dharma by destroying the wicked and protecting the good.

These facts have been explained in Shastras and Puranas. The above were fractional incarnations of Shri Mahadevi just like the incarnations Matsya (fish) and Koorma of Lord Mahavishnu. But Shri Lalitha Devi was the full incarnation of Shri Bhuvaneshwari. After coronation She was called Shri Rajarajeshwari. Her sacred story is as follows:

After the untimely death of his wife Gouri, Lord Rudra renounced all activities and started severe penance. Seeing this Kama the God of Love shot Rudra with his darts of love. Rudra in rage opened his third eye and burnt Kama into ashes. After many years Lord Ganesha made a human form with that ash and placed it before Rudra. Lord Rudra looked at it with compassion and an inert image became a living being. Nandikeshwara initiated him with the holy Rudramanthra. The ash born being repeated the mantra with implicit faith and incessantly prayed Lord Shiva (Rudra). Lord Shiva became highly pleased with him and blessed him with many boons. This being became famous as Bhandasura.

Shrukracharya, the preceptor of demons took him to Shonithapura and there he was crowned as the King of asuras (demons). Shukracharya initiated Bhandasura with many mantras of mysterious power. As advised by Shukracharya, Bhandasura engaged himself in severe penance, got many boons became very powerful. Mad with the newly gained powers he began to torture the people. Even the three Gods - Hari, Hara and Brahma found him to be intolerable. He even invaded heaven and being impossible to face him all the Gods ran away from heaven and took shelter in riverbanks, forests and mountains in disguised form.

Later, after many years with the advice of Divine sage Narada the destitute Gods engaged themselves in meditation, worship and penance to make the Divine Mother manifest before them. They even got ready to sacrifice their bodies in the blazing fire of Yajna. Shri Bhuvaneshwari in Manidweepa (Island of gems) saw the sufferings and penance of Gods and appeared before them in the bright form of Lalitha Devi, which is the full incarnation of Shri Bhuvaneshwari. Gods of heaven and Thrimurthis built a mahamantapa and a chariot for Shri Bhuvaneshwari with the help of Vishwakarma.

Brahma and other Gods assembled in the Mahamantapa and with just a look at Goddess Shri Mahadevi the things they desired was fulfilled. Goddess boarded her Shri Chakra ornamented with navaparvas. Shri Devi with her large army and assistants advanced in no time and arrived at Shonithapura of Bhandasura and encamped there. The battle raged. Within four days Bhandasura's brothers, nephews, relatives and ministers, army chief and large army died fighting against the army of Shri Mahadevi.

On fifth day Bandasura himself came and fought against Shri Mahadevi and died. All the three worlds again returned to peace and happiness. Shortly afterwards Hari, Hara and Brahma engaged the services of the sculptors Vishwakarma and Maya and got sixteen cities built in the Himalayan region and in other places for the stay of the Divine Mother. All these towns were called Shrinagar and Shri Bhuvaneshwari still lives in these sixteen cities and protects all the worlds from the evil forces.

Although the Great Goddess Durga is honored elsewhere in these pages, Her most celebrated role -- as Mahishasura Mardini, the Slayer of Mahisha, the Buffalo Demon -- is so central to the Shakta religion that it merits separate consideration.

HER STORY

Her basic myth is simple, as the greatest stories tend to be: Mahisha, a great demon (asura), has undertaken extraordinary austerities, and thereby accrued such vast power that even the Gods can no longer defeat him. In successive battles, they lose the three worlds to Mahisha's superior might -- and the Cosmic Order in thrown into disarray.

Clearly, a hero and savior is needed -- but who can defeat an enemy that is mightier than the Gods? Answer: The Power (Shakti) that created both the Gods and the enemy in the first place. In order to access that Power, the Gods must reverse the downward unfolding of Divine manifestation, i.e. the cosmic tattvas. (Not coincidentally, this is also the goal of any sadhana undertaken by a human devotee. To help understand the lesson offered here, think of Mahisha as the individual human ego.)

Accordingly, all the Gods simultaneously offer Their own individual powers back to their common Source. And as They do so, They behold an extraordinary sight, as the Source begins to materialize before their eyes:

An exceedingly fiery mass like a flaming mountain
Did the Gods see, filling the firmament with flames.
That peerless splendor, born from the bodies of all the Gods,
Unifying and pervading the triple world with its lustre, became a Woman.
(Devi Mahatmyam, 2.11-12.<)

She is Maha Devi, the Great Goddess, the Mother of all beings, divine and mortal. Taking the warrior form of Her avatar, Goddess Durga, She departs on Her lion mount to meet the demon. A battle of nine days and nine nights ensues, during which Devi decimates Mahisha's armies using lesser Goddesses produced from Her own body.
At last, She and Mahisha alone remain standing on the corpse-strewn battlefield. Of course, Mahisha cannot win, but he takes the forms of many powerful beasts as he tries. While he is in mid-transformation from Buffalo back to Human form, Devi finally slays him, thus saving the Universe, restoring the Cosmic Order -- and earning the title, Mahishasura Mardini.

NAVRATRI, OR DURGA POOJA

Hindus commemorate this great battle each autumn during Durga Pooja, or Navratri -- the Festival of Nine Nights. This is the year's most important festival for Shaktas. Each night a different form of Goddess Durga is worshiped; collectively, these forms are known as the Nine Durgas, or Navdurga

According to a narrative in the Devi Mahatmya story of the Markandeya Purana text, Durga was created as a warrior goddess to fight an asura (an inhuman force/demon) named Mahishasura. He had unleashed a reign of terror on earth, heaven and the nether worlds, and he could not be defeated by any man or god, anywhere. The gods went to Brahma, who had given Mahishasura the power not to be defeated by a man. Brahma could do nothing. They made Brahma their leader and went to Vaikuntha—the place where Vishnu lay on Ananta Naag. They found both Vishnu and Shiva, and Brahma eloquently related the reign of terror Mahishasur had unleashed on the three worlds. Hearing this Vishnu, Shiva and all of the gods became very angry and beams of fierce light emerged from their bodies. The blinding sea of light met at the Ashram of a priest named Katyayan and Durga emerged from this pool of light. The goddess Durga took the name Katyaayani from the priest and emerged from the sea of light. She introduced herself in the language of the Rig-Veda, saying she was the form of the supreme Brahman who had created all the gods. Now she had come to fight the demon to save the gods. They did not create her; it was her lila that she emerged from their combined energy. The gods were blessed with her compassion.
It is said that upon initially encountering Durga, Mahishasura underestimated her, thinking: "How can a woman kill me, Mahishasur—the one who has defeated the trinity of gods?". However, Durga roared with laughter, which caused an earthquake which made Mahishasur aware of her powers.
And the terrible Mahishasura rampaged against her, changing forms many times. First he was a buffalo demon, and she defeated him with her sword. Then he changed forms and became an elephant that tied up the goddess's lion and began to pull it towards him. The goddess cut off his trunk with her sword. The demon Mahishasur continued his terrorizing, taking the form of a lion, and then the form of a man, but both of them were gracefully slain by Durga.
Then Mahishasur began attacking once more, starting to take the form of a buffalo again. The patient goddess became very angry, and proclaimed to Mahishasur in a colorful tone—"Roar with delight while you still can, O illiterate demon, because when I will kill you, the gods themselves will roar with delight".[cite this quote] When Mahishasur had half emerged into his buffalo form, he was paralyzed by the extreme light emitting from the goddess's body. The goddess then resounded with laughter before cutting Mahishasur's head down with her sword.
Thus Durga slew Mahishasur, thus is the power of the fierce compassion of Durga. Hence, Mata Durga is also known as Mahishasurmardhini—the slayer of Mahishasur. According to one legend, the goddess Durga created an army to fight against the forces of the demon-king Mahishasur, who was terrorizing Heaven and Earth. After ten days of fighting, Durga and her army defeated Mahishasur and killed him.

who is surrounded and respected by the Gods, protect me.
May you fully remove my lethargy, sluggishness, and ignorance.

Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah
Om Salutations and Prostrations to the Goddess Saraswati!

Saraswati Devi is the classic example of a Goddess whose popularity has survived from Vedic times into modern Hinduism. While many Vedic Goddesses such as Ushas and Aranyani simply disappear in later Hindu tradition, Saraswati Devi not only maintains Her importance; She acquires additional attributes and Her functions expand - from River Goddess to Goddess of Speech, Learning and Wisdom.

HER ICONOGRAPHY

There are a huge number of myths concerning Saraswati. The Brahma Purana says the Devi created Sarasvati from Her tongue, and from Her shoulders the science of Love

Despite her association with the Gods -- particularly Brahma -- Saraswati Devi is never with Brahma. Rather, She is always described as being an independent woman and not obliging to the Male Gods. SHE STOOD ALONE.

There is a myths about how Saraswati purposely delayed her presence when Brahma wanted to perform a major fire-sacrifice. Brahma and Saraswati therefore never made any joint offerings to the Fire God as man and wife. Despite much lore depicting Saraswati as married, she never really behaved as a proper "consort" might be expected to. Most often, Saraswati is depicting as living in a kind of self-imposed exile. Instead of channeling her devotion to her husband as prescribed by social norms (i.e., "a good wife is above all a chaste wife"). She uses her sexuality for purposes other than providing for her husband's pleasure and bearing his children. Saraswati instead sublimates Her devotion and directly maintaining a social order via Art and Culture.

Saraswati Devi's attributes come more from Her own role as River Goddess than Her association with any particular Gods. The Early Vedic references make it clear that the Saraswati River originates in heaven and flows down to the Earth. SHE represents the ever flowing stream of celestial grace that purifies and fertilises the earth.

Saraswati's earthly manifestation as a river is just a fractional revelation of her TRUE BEING. This manifestation offers just the slightest hint of Her awesome, heavenly, transcendent dimensions, and of reality in general.

Saraswati: The River and Water as Primordial Womb

The association of Goddess and river/waters are not confined in the Hindu tradition. Major cultures such as Egypt and Mesopotamia life creating waters are embodied as a Goddess. Isis the Great Goddess of Egypt began as River Goddess

In classical Hinduism, India herself is affirmed as the center of the world, the naval of the earth, and the special and sacred location of the divine. Saraswati River is an earliest example of the Hindu traditions of affirming the land itself as holy. Rivers with its waters began to assumed a sacred character especially in its religious ritual. The symbolism of water is rich and complex in the religious of the world, and among the many symbols of India endowed with spirituality, water is the most sacred, at once the purifier and the origin of the mystery. It is the real and imagined source of life . And the role of the water is clearly feminine

"he who was born of old… was born of water.
Right from Waters, the Soul drew forth and shaped a person "
[Katha Upanishad]

In many passage of the Samhitas, the waters functions as the material cause of creation. It became a maternal medium in which either the gods or manifest creation itself is said to gestate until it is ready to be born.

"that which beyond heaven, beyond this earth, beyond the gods and asuras - what first embryo/germ, wherein all the gods beheld each other, did the waters hold ? The waters held that very first embryo/germ where all the gods come together, that one in which all worlds abide, placed on the navel of the unborn"
RV 10.82.5-6

The above passage it clearly states the function of the water as primordial womb in which the gods develop and from which they arise. And as womb it bears all creation in its potential form.

YastE stanah SaSayo yo mayobhUyemma
viSvA pushyasi vAryAni
Yo ratnadhA vasuvidyah sudatrah sarasvati tamiha dhAtave kah

RV 1.164.49

Oh Sarasvati offer the breast of yours for our nourishment here which is on your body, which spreads happiness by which you nourish ( those who praise you ) with all the choicest things, the one which holds all the beautiful things, which knows the enemies' wealth and which offers good gifts.

From the role of the river goddess, Saraswati gradually acquire more attributes and becoming known as Vac Goddess. This evolutional role of Saraswati was a gradual one and a natural process because vedic culture and poetry flourished along the River.

Vac "speech" in the Rig Veda are being described as abiding in the highest heaven. Vac has a divine, transcendent aspect as well as an earthly dimensions.
I am queen, gatherer of riches, knowing, the first among those worthy of being honoured.
I am SHE, having many stations and much bestowing, whom the gods have distributed in many places
Through me, he who discerns, who breathes, who indeed hears what is said, eat his food. Though ignorant ( of this) they dwell in me.
Hear that you are heard! What I tell you is to be believed
I, Myself, say this welcome news to gods and men. he whom I love, I make him powerful. I make him a brahmin. I make him a seer . I make him wise... I have entered into heaven and earth. I bring forth the father at the summit of this creation. My womb is within the waters, in the ocean. Thence I extend over all worlds, and I touch heaven with my uppermost part.
I also blow forth like the wind, reaching all the worlds. Beyond heaven, beyond the earth, so great have i become through my grandeur

Rig Veda 10.125

Thus through this hymns we can see the association of Vac and Water and an indication that waters are an aspect of Vac. In Rig Veda 1.164.41-42, Vac is the source of the primordial waters that form the subtle material matrix of creation

Despite its constant reference in the Rig Veda, by the time of the Mahabharata and the laws of Manu ( ca first to third centuries A.D) Saraswati had ceased to exist. Nothing is said in the rig Veda of Saraswati's disappearance. What is left are the Archeological evidences discovered all along the Ghaggar River River, regarded by some as the ancient Saraswati.

It is said that all the three rivers : Saraswati, Ganga and Yamuna meets at Prayag ( Allahabad ) and that Ganga and Yamuna is visible to all, Saraswati only to the spiritually enlightened.
Many Scholars believe the disappearance of Saraswati is due to the the drying up of the River, which then leads to the migration of people eastwards to Ganga-Yamuna and southwards from the Rann of Kutch and Pravara river valley along the Arabian Sea Coast. Another myths says of a curse (Enter link on Saraswati other Myths)

Along with this migration, they carry with them the culture and tradition that have long flourished along the Saraswati River. They never forgets the very place where it begins, thus the devotion towards Saraswati as "The Beginning".

Tripurasundari is described as being of dusky, red, or golden in color, depending on the meditational form, and in sexual union with Shiva. The couple are traditionally portrayed on a bed, a throne, or a pedestal that is upheld by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Indra. She holds five arrows or flowers, a noose, a goad and a sugarcane or bow. The noose represents attachment, the goad represents repulsion, the sugarcane bow represents the mind and the arrows are the five sense objects.
Bala Tripurasundari is another form of Tripurasundari that is pictured either as an independent young goddess who is 16 years of age, or as an unmarried, pre-menarche girl of nine or ten years of age, also known as a kumari. Bala Tripurasundari's mantra differs slightly from that of Maha Tripurasundari.
Tripurasundari is also worshipped as the Sri Yantra, which is considered by practitioners of Sri Vidya to be a more true representation of the goddess.
Tripurasundari combines in her being Kali's determination and Durga’s charm, grace, and complexion. She has a third eye on her forehead. Usually four-armed and clad in red, the richly bejeweled Tripurasundari sits on a lotus seat laid on a golden throne. She carries in her hands various attributes associated with Shiva. An aura of royalty characterizes her overall bearing and ambiance.

Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari is one of the manifestations of Goddess Shakti (Parvati). Words fail to capture the powers and beauty of Sri Lalita Tripura Sundari – she is beyond imagination. The Goddess is believed to have appeared when Shiva stared at the ashes of Kamadeva or Manmatha.
Shiva after the death of Sati had entered into a deep meditation. Without his energy no creation was possible and this led to an imbalance in the universe. To bring him out of his deep meditation, Sati took birth as Parvati. But Parvati failed to wake up Shiva from his meditation. Kamadeva, or Manamatha, the God of love was given the mission of disturbing the meditation of Shiva by infusing the seeds of love. But the glance of an angry Shiva burned Kamdev into ashes.
Devas and Rati, the wife of Kamdev, prayed before Shiva for the life of Kamdev. Shiva then stared at the ashes and from it appeared a demon named Bhandasura. He was so powerful that he made the entire world his slave. Sage Narada then requested the Devas to perform a yajna and from the fire of the yajna appeared Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari.
Her beauty was beyond imagination and humans did not have words to describe her. She married Kameshwara – Shiva as the epitome of manhood. She resided atop the Mahameru Mountain with numerous manifestations of Shakti surrounding her.
The Devas then prayed to her to destroy Bhandasura and restore Dharma. She is believed to have fought the mother of all battles with Bhandasura – some scholars are of the view that Bhandasura took various forms and Devi appeared in different forms to annihilate him. Finally, she killed Bhandasura with the Kameshwarastra. As per Her legend she then brought back Kamdev to life thus restoring the balance in creation which had come to a standstill with the death of Kamadeva.

'Tripura' means 'the three cities,' and 'sundarĩ' means 'beautiful,' specifically a beautiful female. Therefore, her name means 'Beautiful (Goddess) of the Three Cities'. Tripura is often popularly translated as 'the three worlds;' however, this is an incorrect translation of the original Sanskrit.
The 'three cities' esoterically refers to a variety of interpretive doctrines, but commonly refers to the triple form of the goddess as found in the triadic doctrine of Shaktism. According to Bhaskararaya's commentary of the Tripura Upaniṣad:
There are three forms of deity: physical (sthūla), subtle (sūkṣma) and supreme (parã). Now the first [physical anthropomorphic form of the deity] is described in its respective meditative verses (dhyānaśloka); the second [subtle form] consists of the [particular deity's] respective root-mantra (mūlamantra); the third [supreme or transcendent form] consists of contemplative worship [of the deity's yantra]. Because deities are threefold in form, contemplative worship (upãsti) is divided threefold respectively into external sacrifice (bahiryãga) [performed primarily to the physical form of the deity], silent repetition (japa) [on the subtle form root-mantra] and internal sacrifice (antaryãga) [in the form of contemplative worship (upãsti) of the yantra].
Even though the bindu cakra [the "drop" in the center of the śrīcakra, is only one point] it has a threefold nature... The three deities created [and] not different from [her supreme] peaceful (śãnta) [aspect] are [the three creative powers, namely,] Icchãśakti, Jñānaśakti, and Kriyāśakti. The female deities named Vāmā, Jyeṣṭhã, and Raudrī [identified with the three śaktis are complemented] by the three [male consort] forms of Brahmã, Viṣṇu, and Rudra which are not different creations from [her all-subsuming aspect called] Ambikā.
Icchãśakti is literally the 'power of will,' Jñānaśakti is the 'power of knowledge,' and Kriyāśakti is the 'power of action.'
Brooks further notes:
The traditional interpretation of Tripurã's name in Tantric soteriology involves a rather technical discussion of different levels of spiritual insight and worldly accomplishment, the fate of the individual soul (ātman) in the karmic process, and the concepts of external (bahir-) and internal sacrifice (antaryāga).
Tripura also refers to the Śrĩcakra, the yantra that represents the highest vibrational form of Tripurasundari, according to the commentator on the sutra of Gauḍapādā. Bhaskararaya notes in his commentary on Tripura Upaniṣad that the śrĩcakra, composed of nine interlocking triangles, is triple in nature.

She who is full, complete and perfect with food and grains
She who gives nourishment
She who is the strength of Shiva
She who is the grantor of knowledge
She who takes away all fear
She who is the Supreme welfare
She who manifests truth and efficiency
She who is beyond Maya
She who is the cause of creation and dissolution
she who is adi sakthi

Physically, Annapurna is described as holding a golden ladle adorned with various kinds of jewels in her right hand and a vessel full of delicious porridge in her left. She is seated on a throne. In some depictions, Lord Shiva is shown standing to her right with a begging bowl, begging her for alms.
It is said that she does not eat a morsel unless all her devotees have been fed in her temple.

She is worshipped through the recitation of her thousand names and her one hundred and eight names. The Sri Annapurna Ashtakam composed by Shankaracharya is chanted by several devout Hindus around the world as a prayer for nourishment, wisdom, and renunciation. Before partaking of any food, Hindus chant the following prayer:
“Oh Annapurna, who is always full, complete, and perfect. Beloved energy of Lord Shiva, for the attainment of perfection in wisdom and renunciation, give me alms, Parvati.
My mother is Goddess Parvati, my father is the Supreme Lord Maheswara (Shiva). My relatives are the devotees of Lord Shiva, and the three worlds are my Motherland.”
The Annapurna Vrat Katha containing stories of her devotees are also recited by her devotees.

Once Shiva told his consort Parvati that the world is an illusion and that food is a part of this illusion called maya.
The Divine Mother who is worshipped as the manifestation of all material things, including food, became angry. To demonstrate the importance of her manifestation of all that is material she disappeared from the world.
Her disappearance brought time to a standstill and the earth became barren. There was no food to be found anywhere and all the beings suffered from the pangs of hunger.
Seeing all the suffering, Mother Parvati was filled with compassion and reappeared in Kasi and set up a Kitchen.
Hearing about her return, Shiva ran to her and presented his bowl in alms saying, "Now I realise that the material world, like the spirit, cannot be dismissed as an illusion." Parvati smiled and fed Shiva with her own hands.
Since then Parvati is worshipped as Annapurna, the Goddess of Nourishment.

I resort to Lakshmi for shelter in this world,
Who is beautiful like the moon, shining brightly,
Who is blazing with renown,
Who is adored even by the gods,
Who is highly magnanimous, and grand like the lotus.
May my misfortunes perish! I surrender myself to Thee,
O Thou, who art resplendent like the Sun!
Rig Veda, Sri Sukta, 5-6

SRI-LAKSHMI

Lakshmi's worship probably dates back to the prehistoric fertility cults of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. By the late second millenium BCE, her earliest recorded hymn appears in the Rig Veda -- the "Sri Sukta," fifteen verses appended to the hymns of the Khila Sukta. Swami Krishnananda of the Divine Life Society advises that "the Sri-Sukta of the Veda is recited with benefit especially on Fridays, together with formal worship of the Goddess, for peace, plenty and all-round prosperity." By the time of the Upanishads and the Puranas, the Goddess Sri had come to be called Goddess Lakshmi as well. In the untold centuries since, "Sri-Laksmi" has been worshipped as the goddess of wealth, prosperity, fertility and beauty.

HER ICONOGAPHY AND WORSHIP

Lakshmi is usually shown as wearing a beautiful red sari richly embroidered in gold, lovely jewelry, and with golden coins showering from Her hand. She is often accompanied by elephants, symbolizing Her power of bestowing royal power and legitimacy, and also hinting at Her special relationship with the elephant-headed Lord Ganesh/Ganapati. Lakshmi very often carries a brimming pot, again suggesting abundance; She is almost almost surrounded by flowing water, indicating fertility and the life-giving nourishment of the Earth; and she invariably carries a lotus in two of her hands, while also standing or sitting upon a lotus (interestingly, the ancient Indian goddess form now known as Lajja Gauri shares all of these characteristics).

Regarding Her strong association with the lotus, the scholar David Kinsley notes, "Sri Lakshmi thus suggests more that the fertilizing powers of moist soil and the mysterious powers of growth. She suggests a perfection or state of refinement that transcends the material world." Indeed, I chose the top picture on this page -- with its unusual lack of material adornment -- precisely because it seems to emphasize Lakshmi's rarely discussed transcendent aspects.

In later Hinduism, Lakshmi came to be conceived first as fickle wife (think of the fleetingness of good fortune) to a variety of gods, including Soma, Dharma, Indra, and even the Yaksha god Kubera -- before finally settling into mainstream Hindu mythology as the loyal consort of Vishnu. (As the wife of Vishnu, Lakshmi is also the wife of all of Vishnu's avatars; for example, Vaishnavas see Her as both Radha to Krishna, and as Sita to Rama.) Most Vaishnava portrayals present Lakshmi as submissive and subordinate to Vishnu; more sophisticated views conceive Her as equal and non-different from Him -- as expressed in the figure of Lakshmi-Narayana, the fused androgyne form of Vishnu (right side) and Lakshmi (left side), expressing essentially the same truths contained in the Shiva-Parvati fusion of Ardhanariswari.

The most important festival in which Lakshmi is worshiped today is Diwali, or Deepavali, the "Festival of Lights," held each autumn on the darkest night of the year (In 2002, Deepavali fell on Monday, November 4!). The focus is upon prosperity (for example, merchants worship their account books, understanding that there can be no wealth or success without Lakshmi's presence and grace); fertility (She is worshiped in the form of crops in rural areas, or simply food in more urban communities); and good fortune (alongside Ganesh/Ganapati, the other principle deity of Deepavali, Lakshmi grants riches and good luck).

SHAKTA APPROACHES TO LAKSHMI
Shaktas who worship Lakshmi often approach Her as Kamala, Lakshmi's primary Shakta form, best known as a member of Shaktism's primary group of deities, the Ten Mahavidyas. As with all of the Mahavidyas, Kamala is an independent form of the Goddess: It is She, and not Her consort, who merits attention and worship -- Vishnu is barely ever mentioned in relation to Kamala.

The philosophy of Lakshmi as supreme, independent deity is most fully fleshed out in Pancharatra school -- a kind of Tantric subsect of Vaishnavism, which propounds a decidedly Shakta approach to Lakshmi; that is, one that elevates Her to the status of Supreme Divinity. Kinsley explains:

"In the Pancharatra creation scenario, Vishnu remains almost entirely inactive, relegating the creative process to Lakshmi. ... Lakshmi alone acts, and the impression throughout the cosmogony is that She acts independently of Vishnu (although it is stated that She acts according to His wishes). ... The practical effect ... is that [Vishnu] becomes so aloof that Lakshmi dominates the entire Pancharatra vision of the divine. In effect, She acquires the position of the Supreme Divine Principle, the underlying reality upon which all rests, that which pervades all creation with vitality, will and consciousness."

The most important Pancharatra text is the Lakshmi Tantra, which -- among other things -- teaches us that Lakshmi both created and embodies the entire Universe (seen and unseen) out of a mere one-billionth fraction of Herself (14.3). Lakshmi here performs all of the acts that traditional Hinduism attributes to the great male gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. As Lakshmi Herself puts it:

"Inherent in the Principle of Existence, whether manifested or unmanifested, I am at all times the inciter, the potential in all things. I manifest Myself as the Creation, I occupy myself with activity when Creation begins functioning, and I ultimately dissolve Myself at the time of destruction. I alone send the Creation forth and again destroy it. I absolve the sins of the good. As Mother Earth to all beings, I pardon them all their sins. I am the Giver of Everything. I am the thinking process itself and I am contained in Everything." (50.65-67)

In the Lakshmi Tantra, Lakshmi (not Vishnu) is creator, maintainer, and destroyer; She is the sole object of devotion and meditation; She is the dispenser of grace; She is the bestower of liberation (50.131-132). And yet, for all of that, She retains Her fundamental association with fertility, abundance and well-being -- again, like Lajja Gauri, She is the "sap of life" that vitalizes all Creation; but here She is also said to be the supreme "sap of consciousness" that underlies the entire manifest world (50.110).

** Sri Gayatri Devi **

I meditate on the (five-faced) Goddess Gayatri, who faces are of the hues of the pearl coral gold, blue, black and white ( stones), of three eyes ( in each face ), with jewelled diadems set with the crescent moon, composed of syllabus representing the Great Truth, and holding in the ( ten ) hands, the poses of offeringing refuge and boons, goad, whip, white skull, rope, conch, discus and two lotus.

Gayatri, The Personal Mother- The Mythological description of Devi Gayatri

SUPREME, pure consciousness is Parabrahman, the impersonal Godhead. This transcendental consciousness as power is Mother. She is known as Gayatri. She is the primal cause of everything that was, that is, and that will be. When she manifested the triguna-s or three qualities, known as sattva (poise), rajas ( passion), and tamas (stupor), these three qualities, possessing the pure consciousness that is Parabrahman, took three forms known as Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Brahma was possessed by rajas, Visnu by sattva, and Siva by tamas. Gayatri was worshipped by the Trinity as The Mother. When Brahma, Visnu and Siva were just children, GayatriDevi put them into the cradle of Void ( akasa ) that was hung by the chains of the four Vedas ( wisdom ) and with Om lullaby. She put them to sleep. Seeing that Her children possessed by guna-s were sleeping, Devi disappeared.

After a long time, the Trimurti got up and began crying. They grew up and were wandering in Void by the power of the guna-s and then they thought of finding their Mother. They sat in mediatation for a long time. As the fire of their austerity was scorching the universe, the Universal Mother, being compassionate, decided to appear before them. Even though She is all-pervasive, still for Her divine lila ( sport), She manifested Her divine form.

She was the most beautiful Mother, She wore a red sari, Garlands dangled round Her neck and Her face was like the full moon. She had three eyes and Her forehead carried a round mark of red powder. She had eight arms holding lotuses, mace, conch, and toerings, bangles and many shining rings, jewels and ornaments, all of which were supraphysical ( aprakrta )

She came running for Her children and perspiration was dropping from Her face like pearls. Then, She hurried to Her children and called them by their names as Brahma, Visnu and Siva. The Trimurti ran to their mother, who kissed and caressed them again and again. Holding them in Her arms, she said :

"O divine children, I made you undergo this great agony of separation. I should have come to you long before. I just wanted you to gain powers of creation, preservation and dissolution through austerity, so that the souls who partake their role in this cosmic lila should see the ideal of austerity and penance shown by you three. I was always with you; within yourselves by My grace, then I took a transcendental form also so that the soul thereafter might worship My divine form as the Divine Mother Gayatri. I shall be pleased with their worship and confer on them all prosperity and bhakti. Let Brahma, by the rajas ( passion and activity ) create; and Visnu, by the quality of Sattva ( equilibrium ) maintain and preserve, and let Siva, by tamas ( destruction ) bring dissolution at the end of cycles. Pray to Me during the times of confusion and difficulty for guidance. "

Saying thus, the most blessed Mother disappeared. This shows that Gayatri is Vedamata or Mother of the Vedas, ie sources of divine wisdom. She is the inseparable power of Parabrahman, the Supreme pure consciouness.

Bala Tripurasundari :

Bala Tripurasundari is the child form (about 7 to 9 years old) of Lalita Tripurasundari.

Her mantra generally provides a shishya's entry to Srividya. She is also said to be the strength of the Goddess.

According to Her dhyana, Bala (Baa-laa) is the color of the rising sun, smiling lightly; She has four hands. She holds a rosary and abook in Her two upper hands; the lower hands show the abhaya andvarada mudras. She is seated on a blue lily (*not* lotus).I do not know of any precise ontological relationship to Saraswati, other than to say they are both aspects of the one Devi.

"Both of them went to Lalita devi, expressed sorry for what had happened and made arrangements for protection. At the instance of Lalita devi, Jwalamalini devi made a compound wall of fire around the devi's army The fire wall is 100 yojana wide and 30 yojana tall. (1 yojana is approximately 8 miles).

At the southern end of fire wall is a 1 yojana long entry, toenable devi's army go out and fight because Shunyapuram is facingthis end.(L.S.N—jwalamalini kashipta vahniprakaramadhyaga. Stambhini devi a member of Dandanatha devi family along with 20 akshohini senas was protecting this entry point. She is also called Vighna devi. By then it was dawn

Knowing all this news Bhandasura was in despair and started thinking what to do. This time he sent all his 30 sons for the war. After listening to this news Lalita devi's daughter Bala devi wanted to fight these demons herself. Bala devi is the only daughter of Lalita devi .She resembles Lalita devi very much but is always only 9 years old. She stays permanently with her mother only. Bala devi approached her mother and requested for permission to fight in the battlefield. At the outset Lalita devi denied but looking at the courage and will power exhibited by Bala devi she ultimately gave permission. Seeing Bala devi coming for the war Mantrini and Dandanayaka were astonished , they stood as her body guards. Now Baladevi started ferocious fighting with Bhanda's sons.Every one was surprised at her valour. Whole of the second day Baladevi fought. That evening she shot 30 arrows at a time and killed 30 sons of Bhanda. Lalita devi was very happy and she embraced her daughter (L.S.N---Bhandaputravadhodyukta bala vikrama nandita) Bhanda was grief stricken. Desperately he himself started offf or the war. Vishukra and Vishanga pacified Bandasura"
