I resort to Lakshmi for shelter in this world,
Who is beautiful like the moon, shining brightly,
Who is blazing with renown,
Who is adored even by the gods,
Who is highly magnanimous, and grand like the lotus.
May my misfortunes perish! I surrender myself to Thee,
O Thou, who art resplendent like the Sun!
Rig Veda, Sri Sukta, 5-6

SRI-LAKSHMI

Lakshmi's worship probably dates back to the prehistoric fertility cults of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. By the late second millenium BCE, her earliest recorded hymn appears in the Rig Veda -- the "Sri Sukta," fifteen verses appended to the hymns of the Khila Sukta. Swami Krishnananda of the Divine Life Society advises that "the Sri-Sukta of the Veda is recited with benefit especially on Fridays, together with formal worship of the Goddess, for peace, plenty and all-round prosperity." By the time of the Upanishads and the Puranas, the Goddess Sri had come to be called Goddess Lakshmi as well. In the untold centuries since, "Sri-Laksmi" has been worshipped as the goddess of wealth, prosperity, fertility and beauty.

HER ICONOGAPHY AND WORSHIP

Lakshmi is usually shown as wearing a beautiful red sari richly embroidered in gold, lovely jewelry, and with golden coins showering from Her hand. She is often accompanied by elephants, symbolizing Her power of bestowing royal power and legitimacy, and also hinting at Her special relationship with the elephant-headed Lord Ganesh/Ganapati. Lakshmi very often carries a brimming pot, again suggesting abundance; She is almost almost surrounded by flowing water, indicating fertility and the life-giving nourishment of the Earth; and she invariably carries a lotus in two of her hands, while also standing or sitting upon a lotus (interestingly, the ancient Indian goddess form now known as Lajja Gauri shares all of these characteristics).

Regarding Her strong association with the lotus, the scholar David Kinsley notes, "Sri Lakshmi thus suggests more that the fertilizing powers of moist soil and the mysterious powers of growth. She suggests a perfection or state of refinement that transcends the material world." Indeed, I chose the top picture on this page -- with its unusual lack of material adornment -- precisely because it seems to emphasize Lakshmi's rarely discussed transcendent aspects.

In later Hinduism, Lakshmi came to be conceived first as fickle wife (think of the fleetingness of good fortune) to a variety of gods, including Soma, Dharma, Indra, and even the Yaksha god Kubera -- before finally settling into mainstream Hindu mythology as the loyal consort of Vishnu. (As the wife of Vishnu, Lakshmi is also the wife of all of Vishnu's avatars; for example, Vaishnavas see Her as both Radha to Krishna, and as Sita to Rama.) Most Vaishnava portrayals present Lakshmi as submissive and subordinate to Vishnu; more sophisticated views conceive Her as equal and non-different from Him -- as expressed in the figure of Lakshmi-Narayana, the fused androgyne form of Vishnu (right side) and Lakshmi (left side), expressing essentially the same truths contained in the Shiva-Parvati fusion of Ardhanariswari.

The most important festival in which Lakshmi is worshiped today is Diwali, or Deepavali, the "Festival of Lights," held each autumn on the darkest night of the year (In 2002, Deepavali fell on Monday, November 4!). The focus is upon prosperity (for example, merchants worship their account books, understanding that there can be no wealth or success without Lakshmi's presence and grace); fertility (She is worshiped in the form of crops in rural areas, or simply food in more urban communities); and good fortune (alongside Ganesh/Ganapati, the other principle deity of Deepavali, Lakshmi grants riches and good luck).

SHAKTA APPROACHES TO LAKSHMI
Shaktas who worship Lakshmi often approach Her as Kamala, Lakshmi's primary Shakta form, best known as a member of Shaktism's primary group of deities, the Ten Mahavidyas. As with all of the Mahavidyas, Kamala is an independent form of the Goddess: It is She, and not Her consort, who merits attention and worship -- Vishnu is barely ever mentioned in relation to Kamala.

The philosophy of Lakshmi as supreme, independent deity is most fully fleshed out in Pancharatra school -- a kind of Tantric subsect of Vaishnavism, which propounds a decidedly Shakta approach to Lakshmi; that is, one that elevates Her to the status of Supreme Divinity. Kinsley explains:

"In the Pancharatra creation scenario, Vishnu remains almost entirely inactive, relegating the creative process to Lakshmi. ... Lakshmi alone acts, and the impression throughout the cosmogony is that She acts independently of Vishnu (although it is stated that She acts according to His wishes). ... The practical effect ... is that [Vishnu] becomes so aloof that Lakshmi dominates the entire Pancharatra vision of the divine. In effect, She acquires the position of the Supreme Divine Principle, the underlying reality upon which all rests, that which pervades all creation with vitality, will and consciousness."

The most important Pancharatra text is the Lakshmi Tantra, which -- among other things -- teaches us that Lakshmi both created and embodies the entire Universe (seen and unseen) out of a mere one-billionth fraction of Herself (14.3). Lakshmi here performs all of the acts that traditional Hinduism attributes to the great male gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. As Lakshmi Herself puts it:

"Inherent in the Principle of Existence, whether manifested or unmanifested, I am at all times the inciter, the potential in all things. I manifest Myself as the Creation, I occupy myself with activity when Creation begins functioning, and I ultimately dissolve Myself at the time of destruction. I alone send the Creation forth and again destroy it. I absolve the sins of the good. As Mother Earth to all beings, I pardon them all their sins. I am the Giver of Everything. I am the thinking process itself and I am contained in Everything." (50.65-67)

In the Lakshmi Tantra, Lakshmi (not Vishnu) is creator, maintainer, and destroyer; She is the sole object of devotion and meditation; She is the dispenser of grace; She is the bestower of liberation (50.131-132). And yet, for all of that, She retains Her fundamental association with fertility, abundance and well-being -- again, like Lajja Gauri, She is the "sap of life" that vitalizes all Creation; but here She is also said to be the supreme "sap of consciousness" that underlies the entire manifest world (50.110).

** Sri Gayatri Devi **

I meditate on the (five-faced) Goddess Gayatri, who faces are of the hues of the pearl coral gold, blue, black and white ( stones), of three eyes ( in each face ), with jewelled diadems set with the crescent moon, composed of syllabus representing the Great Truth, and holding in the ( ten ) hands, the poses of offeringing refuge and boons, goad, whip, white skull, rope, conch, discus and two lotus.

Gayatri, The Personal Mother- The Mythological description of Devi Gayatri

SUPREME, pure consciousness is Parabrahman, the impersonal Godhead. This transcendental consciousness as power is Mother. She is known as Gayatri. She is the primal cause of everything that was, that is, and that will be. When she manifested the triguna-s or three qualities, known as sattva (poise), rajas ( passion), and tamas (stupor), these three qualities, possessing the pure consciousness that is Parabrahman, took three forms known as Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Brahma was possessed by rajas, Visnu by sattva, and Siva by tamas. Gayatri was worshipped by the Trinity as The Mother. When Brahma, Visnu and Siva were just children, GayatriDevi put them into the cradle of Void ( akasa ) that was hung by the chains of the four Vedas ( wisdom ) and with Om lullaby. She put them to sleep. Seeing that Her children possessed by guna-s were sleeping, Devi disappeared.

After a long time, the Trimurti got up and began crying. They grew up and were wandering in Void by the power of the guna-s and then they thought of finding their Mother. They sat in mediatation for a long time. As the fire of their austerity was scorching the universe, the Universal Mother, being compassionate, decided to appear before them. Even though She is all-pervasive, still for Her divine lila ( sport), She manifested Her divine form.

She was the most beautiful Mother, She wore a red sari, Garlands dangled round Her neck and Her face was like the full moon. She had three eyes and Her forehead carried a round mark of red powder. She had eight arms holding lotuses, mace, conch, and toerings, bangles and many shining rings, jewels and ornaments, all of which were supraphysical ( aprakrta )

She came running for Her children and perspiration was dropping from Her face like pearls. Then, She hurried to Her children and called them by their names as Brahma, Visnu and Siva. The Trimurti ran to their mother, who kissed and caressed them again and again. Holding them in Her arms, she said :

"O divine children, I made you undergo this great agony of separation. I should have come to you long before. I just wanted you to gain powers of creation, preservation and dissolution through austerity, so that the souls who partake their role in this cosmic lila should see the ideal of austerity and penance shown by you three. I was always with you; within yourselves by My grace, then I took a transcendental form also so that the soul thereafter might worship My divine form as the Divine Mother Gayatri. I shall be pleased with their worship and confer on them all prosperity and bhakti. Let Brahma, by the rajas ( passion and activity ) create; and Visnu, by the quality of Sattva ( equilibrium ) maintain and preserve, and let Siva, by tamas ( destruction ) bring dissolution at the end of cycles. Pray to Me during the times of confusion and difficulty for guidance. "

Saying thus, the most blessed Mother disappeared. This shows that Gayatri is Vedamata or Mother of the Vedas, ie sources of divine wisdom. She is the inseparable power of Parabrahman, the Supreme pure consciouness.

Bala Tripurasundari :

Bala Tripurasundari is the child form (about 7 to 9 years old) of Lalita Tripurasundari.

Her mantra generally provides a shishya's entry to Srividya. She is also said to be the strength of the Goddess.

According to Her dhyana, Bala (Baa-laa) is the color of the rising sun, smiling lightly; She has four hands. She holds a rosary and abook in Her two upper hands; the lower hands show the abhaya andvarada mudras. She is seated on a blue lily (*not* lotus).I do not know of any precise ontological relationship to Saraswati, other than to say they are both aspects of the one Devi.

"Both of them went to Lalita devi, expressed sorry for what had happened and made arrangements for protection. At the instance of Lalita devi, Jwalamalini devi made a compound wall of fire around the devi's army The fire wall is 100 yojana wide and 30 yojana tall. (1 yojana is approximately 8 miles).

At the southern end of fire wall is a 1 yojana long entry, toenable devi's army go out and fight because Shunyapuram is facingthis end.(L.S.N—jwalamalini kashipta vahniprakaramadhyaga. Stambhini devi a member of Dandanatha devi family along with 20 akshohini senas was protecting this entry point. She is also called Vighna devi. By then it was dawn

Knowing all this news Bhandasura was in despair and started thinking what to do. This time he sent all his 30 sons for the war. After listening to this news Lalita devi's daughter Bala devi wanted to fight these demons herself. Bala devi is the only daughter of Lalita devi .She resembles Lalita devi very much but is always only 9 years old. She stays permanently with her mother only. Bala devi approached her mother and requested for permission to fight in the battlefield. At the outset Lalita devi denied but looking at the courage and will power exhibited by Bala devi she ultimately gave permission. Seeing Bala devi coming for the war Mantrini and Dandanayaka were astonished , they stood as her body guards. Now Baladevi started ferocious fighting with Bhanda's sons.Every one was surprised at her valour. Whole of the second day Baladevi fought. That evening she shot 30 arrows at a time and killed 30 sons of Bhanda. Lalita devi was very happy and she embraced her daughter (L.S.N---Bhandaputravadhodyukta bala vikrama nandita) Bhanda was grief stricken. Desperately he himself started offf or the war. Vishukra and Vishanga pacified Bandasura"

Aswini :

Yoga Therapy

Oftentimes subsequent to sudden loss weight you may notice things like sagging skin and stretch marks. These will, evidently, make you feel even worse.

Hence, the best thing to do is to shed weight gradually but permanently. Yoga therapy offers excellent solutions to the problem of obesity. Yoga poses tone up the body in a homogeneous way. This is unlike any “weight loss programs" that claim to reduce your butt by so many inches and waist by so much, subsequently ending up in harmful side effects. Best of all, Yoga therapy can be administered for people of all ages and both sexes to keep the body slim and fit.

An overall plan for shedding weight naturally is:
Cleansing techniques: -Basti (colon wash)
Kunjal Kriya (stomach cleansing)
Laghu Shanka Prakshalana (water laxative)

Yoga poses (Asanas) for shedding weight:
Surya – Namaskars – Sun Salutation (10 rounds)
Vrikshasana – Tree pose
Trikonasana – Triangle pose
Virasana – Hero pose
Salabhasana – Locust pose
Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
Ushtrasana -Camel pose
Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose
Balasana – Child pose Half spinal twist
Bidalasana – Cat pose

Thos who wish to take one body part at a time, such as the hips or abdomen or thighs or arms or legs or chest are also welcome to do those Yoga poses specific to suit their requirements. These can either be done separately or incorporated in the above plan.

Exercises and Yoga poses to tighten up your abdomen are:

Abdominal lifts
Balasana – Child pose
Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose Half spinal twist
Naukasana – Boat pose

Yogic poses for your arms and legs:
